I have noted a strange occurrence as of late. Its seems that about 1 out of every 5 new Twitter accounts are protected. This scares me because isn't that part of Twitter? Being able to communicate with other people, learn from other people and their 140 characters of fame. What's the point of having a Twitter account that no one can search?
Some of my favorite applications online are based wholy on the fact of public Twitter accounts. One of my favorites right now, Visible Tweets. Is based on just showing a search string in a quite beautiful way. You can't even be a part of that if you protect your Twitter account.
So now I guess this is just a plea. If you are going to make a Twitter account or if you already have a Twitter account and it's protected. Unprotect that damn thing and let people see what you have to say! Let the world know what you are doing/thinking/saying. That's the point people and if you don't figure it out you are going to bring about the demise of Twitter.
Tell me what you think, do you think people should have public accounts or are you someone that thinks protected accounts are a good idea?

Public, without a doubt. However, I do think Twitter has become more mainstream and not a lot of people know how to use it. Yes, there seems to be etiquette for Twitter so learn it!
i get ur point, but just as a reason for protecting myspace and facebooks...twitter can easily be searched by employers, schools, students (if ur a teacher) etc and the info you present can be used against you. id rather be myself and protect my account, than make it public and walk on eggshells
